Avoid a Networking Faux Pas -- Maximize Your Professional Relationships


Have you ever committed a networking faux pas that had a disastrous result? All IFMA-SV facility managers and service/vendor associates have the opportunity to make great professional relationships at IFMA events, but the networking between professionals and associates can be a harrowing and unpleasant experience for both parties.

 

We network for many reasons – to find a compatriot with whom to share ideas or form a friendship, to support a new job search or to find new business opportunities. Some professional might be afraid to attend events where they feel they will be cornered by vendors. One the other side of the coin, there also exists networking opportunities that can lead to mutually beneficial and rewarding relationships and friendships. How does that happen? How should we act with one another or approach someone at what should be a fun networking event? What are the networking rules or tips?

 

This interactive Deep Dive presentation will solicit input from the audience and will include a panel of two professionals and two associates. The panel will share examples/anecdotes of what they and the audience have experienced, the good and the bad. They will explore actions or inactions for both the professional and the associate that can lead to unfavorable networking results and the direct and indirect consequences to both parties. The panel will provide insight on how to get the most benefit out of any professional network.

Nichole Robertson

Business Development and Account Management for Teladata

Nichole Robertson has been a member of IFMA Silicon Valley since 2006, and served as Chapter President in 2013. During her presidency she championed the theme of “The Social Facility” and lead in the creation of IFMASV Social, the chapter social networking site. She has served on the Professional Development Committee (8 years), the Board of Directors (4 years), and the Emerging Facilities Professionals Committee (1 Year). In addition, she has heavily focused her talents on Special Events including the first IFMA Educational Symposium and numerous Vendor Fairs, Holiday Parties, and Membership Mixers.

Nichole has been working in Business Development and Account Management at Teladata since 2005. She works closely with IT and Facilities professionals to determine client technology requirements and stays active and engaged throughout their projects to ensure their needs are met. She has been managing and coordinating educational seminars/conferences for over 10 years and also helps coordinate Teladata’s Technology Convergence Conference in Santa Clara. Nichole received her Bachelor of Science Degree with an emphasis in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from Chapman University.

Jennifer Olsen, FMP, CFM, SFP

Facility Manager in Real Estate and Corporate Security at Infineon Technologies North America Corp

Jennifer is a Past President of IFMA Silicon Valley and is a Facility Manager in Real Estate and Corporate Security at Infineon Technologies in Milpitas. Jennifer has been instrumental in our chapter’s educational designation classes as well as heading up our scholarship committee. She has been a Mentor in the Chapter’s Mentoring Program to assist those new to FM, and has lent her talents to a number of other committees including the Professional Development Committee and Special Events. Jennifer attended the University of Ottawa and holds a BSSc in Economics and French in 1992, but facilities soon became her focus. After working as an FM for several years, she earned her FMP in 2009, her CFM in 2009 and her SFP in 2012.

Wayne Whitzell

Executive Vice President, DFS Green

IFMA East Bay Chapter President, Wayne Whitzell, has been an active member in IFMA since 2000.  Over the years, he has held various chapter positions such as Sustainability Committee Chair, Website Chair, and Sacramento Valley Chapter Vice President.    Most recently, Wayne was recognized as IFMA’s Associate of The Year for 2015.  He has been to eleven World Workplace conferences and has presented at several IFMA chapter and council events and Facility Fusion.  Wayne holds credentials as a LEED®AP, Business Energy Professional (BEP), and is a certified Green Business Operator (GBO).  Wayne is the Executive Vice President for DFS Green, a company which specializes in cleaning carpets, fabrics, tile & grout, and natural stone across the United States.

Jim Zuiderhoek, FMP

Director, Global Real Estate & Facilities Services, RMS

Jim Zuiderhoek has been working in Facilities at RMS in Newark for the past 6+ years. He has been a Silicon Valley (SV) member for over twenty years and has participated on the Profession Development Committee for the last 6 years.  This will be Jim's 6th year on the IFMA-SV Board of Directors.
