The Future of Sensor Technology and Smart Buildings is Here Today

Sensors have been used for decades throughout the built environment. Whether they’re being used to measure, monitor, or detect, their primary function is to gather information and transfer it to a device for processing. Traditionally, the data collected from these sensors is compiled for review and analysis by humans, allowing us to make informed decisions based off of actual statistics. As facilities managers, this can be a key component in allowing us to operate our buildings effectively and efficiently. But what if our buildings could use this data directly, without human intervention? What if they could process the data, analyze it, and learn from it, constantly evolving in their daily operation?

While this concept may seem futuristic, our guest speaker will explain that these truly smart buildings are a reality in our world today. Joe Scanlin, Co-Founder and CEO of Scanalytics, will share how sensor technology has advanced over the years, tangibly enabling us to gather invaluable data for use in managing our facilities. Learn how building system behavior is constantly progressing, ultimately mimicking that of a human brain in its ability to learn, adapt, and make decisions. Hear how these advancements are currently being used for workplace strategy, emergency response, active shooters, and much more.

Tying in perfectly with our theme for the year, Advanced Technology in the Built Environment, this is a meeting you don’t want to miss! Join us at the SAP Palo Alto campus for an awe-inspiring look into the technology behind smart buildings. Then, stay for delicious food and drink in their beautiful courtyard.

SPEAKER:

Joe Scanlin- CEO of Scanalytics

Joe cofounded and is the CEO of Scanalytics, the leading Internet of Things company focused on sensor-fusion for physical environments that pioneered the smart-flooring sensor. Scanalytics helps future-proof buildings by using proprietary sensors that are embedded into permanent fixtures like floors and ceilings. These sensors, combined with other sensor data,

give buildings the most granular, accurate, and consistent observation of space utilization so the building can automatically react to occupant behaviors. Scanalytics is making it possible for the built environment to have a “brain.”

Prior to Scanalytics, Joe studied a range of subjects from Organizational Behavior to Applied Neuroscience, and is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He sits on the board of multiple technology companies in the computer vision, artificial intelligence, and medical device fields. Joe has contributed to and authored books, papers, and patents in the fields of spatial science, sensor design, and natural language processing. He is currently part of a project that is using computational linguistics to help identify and attenuate mental health deterioration. Joe helped create “Atmos” which is a Chicago-based spatial science consortium focused on promoting urban intelligence through adoption of smart buildings.

Outside of work, Joe is an avid endurance athlete, enjoys training and competing jiu jitsu, and likes pretty much anything with a motor that can go fast. His newest and most important job is that of a father to his recently born baby girl, Sloane.
